Getting started

What is Simple Budget?

Simple Budget is an offline cash flow forecasting app built to help you feel in control of your money, not anxious about it. Instead of just showing what you've already spent, it projects your account balance for every day of the year based on your recurring bills, income, and planned expenses, so you can see a cash crunch coming weeks before it happens, while there's still time to do something about it.

Is it really free?

Yes, genuinely. The free "Basic" tier is the complete core forecasting experience, not a stripped-down trial meant to nudge you toward paying. Everyone deserves to see their financial future clearly, whether or not they ever upgrade. Pro adds multiple budgets, CSV export, rollover, and theme control, unlocked with a one-time payment. It also took real hours to build, test, and keep running, so if the free tier alone has earned a place in your routine, even the smallest contribution goes further than you'd think.

Do I need an account or internet connection?

No. Simple Budget is fully offline by design, no bank connections, no accounts to create. Walk through the Setup Wizard once, and everything stays right there on your device from then on.

How do I get started?

The Setup Wizard walks you through it step by step: your Forecast Year, starting balances, and your recurring Deposits, Expenses, Transfers, and Variable Expenses. If you'd rather look before you leap, load Demo Data from the onboarding screen and explore the app with sample numbers first.

What is "Savings Harvest"?

Savings Harvest flags the moments your forecast shows more cushion than you need, when your Daily Spend buffer and Variable Expenses estimates leave real surplus sitting in checking. Instead of letting that surplus sit stagnant, Savings Harvest calls it out so you can put it to work: an emergency fund, a high-yield savings account, retirement, or investments, whatever moves your future forward. The app runs the forecast; you make the call on where the extra goes.

Using the Setup Wizard

What does "Daily Spend" do?

A small daily cushion for the little stuff, coffee, lunch, a snack run, spending that's easy to lose track of but adds up anyway. Set one flat amount and it applies automatically every day. It also works as a buffer: on the days you spend less than that, the leftover cushion helps cover the days you go a bit over, or a bill that lands heavier than planned. Set it to 0 if you'd rather track everyday spending as explicit Variable Expenses instead.

What's the difference between Expenses and Variable Expenses?

Expenses are the bills that don't move: rent, a subscription, a loan payment, same amount, same date, every time. Variable Expenses cover the stuff that's real but never exact, groceries, gas, the parts of life that shift week to week, plus the once-a-year costs that are easy to forget until they land: vehicle registration, an annual subscription renewal, anything that shows up quarterly or yearly instead of monthly. Give your best estimate and the forecast works with it. Getting close is enough to see what's coming.

Does the Priority field on bills actually change anything?

Not yet, and we'd rather tell you that plainly than let you assume otherwise. Priority (1–5) is stored and shown next to each bill so you can sort by what matters most to you, but it doesn't currently drive any "pay this first if money's tight" logic in the forecast. Consider it your own reference for now, with smarter behavior around it on the roadmap.

Can I try the app with sample data first?

Yes, and we'd encourage it. The onboarding wizard has a Demo Data button that loads a full sample budget, income, bills, and transfers, so you can see exactly how the forecast comes together before typing in a single real number. One thing to know: it wipes anything you've already entered, and it's irreversible once confirmed. Already have real data in there? A quick backup first is free and takes a few seconds.

Privacy & your data

Is my financial data private?

Yes, completely. Simple Budget was built on the belief that your financial picture belongs to you and no one else, so there are no accounts, no analytics, and no ad tracking watching what you do. There's no server for your budgets or forecasts to sync to. Everything lives in a local database on your device, full stop. That also means we don't make money off your data the way a lot of "free" apps do. If that's worth something to you, the Pro unlock is how we stay funded, no ads, no data broker, just whatever you're willing to spend once. See the full Privacy Policy for specifics.

Can I back up or export my data?

Yes. JSON backup export and import is available on every tier, free included, so you're never locked out of your own numbers when you switch devices or reinstall. CSV export, for pulling your data into a spreadsheet, is a Pro feature.

Pro & pricing

What's included in Pro?

Multiple budgets (handy for separating personal and side finances, or planning alongside a partner), CSV export, rollover (carrying your projected-vs-actual variance into the new year, so nothing gets lost at the reset), and theme control, including dark mode and a color per budget. All of it built to help you see more, not to gate the basics. If none of that sounds like something you need yet, unlocking Pro anyway is still a fair way to help keep this thing going.

Is Pro a subscription?

No. It's a one-time unlock, not a recurring charge, pay once and it's yours for good. We'd rather you keep more of your money than hand us a slice of it every month.

How do I unlock Pro?

Right in the app, through Google Play Billing, a couple of taps and you're unlocked.

Support

Where do I send bug reports or feedback?

Use the contact form on the main page, and thank you in advance. This app gets better because real people using it tell us what's working and what isn't. A few specifics go a long way: what you expected, what happened instead, and what device you're on.
